I knew there was something that I wanted to blog about this afternoon. I've been reading alot of blogs lately and everyone is carrying on about using "vintage sheets" for quilting. They are picking them up at garage sales, and thrift stores. OK, I know I'll get alot of flak for this but here's my opinion and I am entitled to one. How in the world can you use USED sheets in a quilt. Be it for the front of the quilt or the backing???????? Do you have any idea where that sheet has been or what's been done on that sheet??????? I don't care if it's been used a bazillion times to me it's just sick and wrong. That ranks right up there with buying used underwear at Goodwill. There are just some things that shouldn't be used in my opinion.
I understand that there is alot of yardage in a sheet but that doesn't make it right. Most quilters spend decent money on the fabric for the top so why would you want to buy a used old sheet and then put it on the back of your quilt????????
Oh well, like I said it's just my opinion but this has really been bugging me lately and I needed to say it. When I have a sheet that's old it's either torn up and becomes a dust rag or sometimes it's a nice pressing sheet or it simply gets tossed out. I wouldn't even use mine for a backing and I know what's happened on those sheets.

I love the prints of the old sheets, and they are fun to put together in big, soft pastel squares. I wash them in hot water, come on, a given, right?
But, I have learned to only buy the top sheet, as sometimes the bottom one has too much, I'll just say, wear. We were disgusted with how yellow the fitted sheet looked against the top one. I'll probably be the only one to respond, I'm not offended by your observations, and I hope I haven't bothered you to comment from the other side of the fence. I can see the reasons for why old sheets are used.
Our quilt group discussed this very thing several months ago and totally agree with you.
I think that were I to use an old (let's be real here - vintage = old!) sheet, I would do the entire quilt in old sheets. I would NEVER use a sheet to back a quilt...especially not an old sheet! I spend a lot of money on quality quilt fabric. Yes, sheets have a lot of fabric but it isn't the same quality and does not quilt the same. All sheet quilt - maybe ok. If you are a scrap quilter or quilt to make utility quilts, using sheets may make sense.
Personally, I buy old sheets to rip up for rag rugs and dust rags.
Hahaha, this made me laugh! I am one of those people who use 'vintage' sheets because I like the idea of up-cycling and reusing old fabric.... I had never actually put two and two together and thought about where it actually comes from..... ew!! Might now reconsider... :-) Sam xox
Seriously, there have been all sorts of bodily juices on these sheets. Buying a sheet god knows where just because it's vintage and pretty doesn't mean it has less fluids. And a top sheet versus a bottom sheet? Umm, they get washed TOGETHER right? They get used TOGETHER right? Same fluids TOP and BOTTOM. Have these people ever watched an episode of CSI? People don't like to sleep in hotel bedding for a reason, what makes a garage sale or a good will any different?
I saw someone use a vintage sheet for a little girls dress and I thought HA! I bet someone elses child was conceived on that sheet and your kid is wearing it.

I agree! I would never use a sheet for a quilt. I put too much work into my quilting to let it become ucky with an old sheet. Sheets are not constructed the same as other material, so I wouldn't use a brand new one either. Backing isn't that expensive when you're making a quality quilt.
